Find the best Maybush walks. The Ramblers Association now have a greatly improved website which is an exceptional resource for all walkers, hikers and young families wanting to go for walks with young children. This site lists everything from historical walks to leader led walks to any really arduous walks within the Redbridge area.

Find A Walk Near Me by using Walking Britain is a truly excellent and free resource. Just enter where you are or where you would like to walk - and print out directions. The walks are graded and you can buy a specific map of the area at the same time. These are proper OS maps and weather proofed if required.

I always think of walking as one of the few activities you can do for free - and now you can with this guide!

Walking, Hiking and Outdoor Shops

Go Outdoors

Third Ave, Millbrook Rd W, Southampton SO15 0LE, UK – 0344 387 6825

Staff member called Chris helped me find a good pair of walking boots that fit properly for the long distance walk I am doing. He answered all of my questions and even taught me a couple of different ways to lace up my boots. Thank you!

Met a man called Michael, originally when I came in with my family, we only knew we wanted to try camping, so we were really lost, but Michael came up to us upon entry, greeted us all, asked how he could help and whisked us right to where we needed to go! He had an amazing knowledge of what everyone needed and wanted, and was even able to entertain the children for a few minuets while I discussed with the misses! Absolutely amazing customer service, will be coming back.

The Range, Southampton

230-234 Winchester Rd, Southampton SO16 6TL, UK – 023 8077 5577

I always go here to buy staff for my crafting and paintings! I find easily everything, also for clothing-making/painting! Love this place - I also bought many staff for cooking/kitchen. It's really a nice quality for many cheap prices! But the staff is not very friendly, at least, only a few of them tried to help me patiently. Maybe because they're not paid very well.. But that's the reason why items are so cheap. 😋

As the name of the place suggests, it does indeed have a wide range of products! This place has saved us on numerous occasions when we've needed something for the home or garden that was even slightly out of the ordinary. Very practical shop. Staff can be a little terse at times but I've never had a particularly bad experience with them.

Homebase

Millbrook Rd W, Southampton SO15 0SD, UK – 0345 640 7095

Have shopped at Homebase store for years now but was very disappointed as my husband's disability means he is in a wheelchair. Ours has a flat tyre so we asked if we could borrow the stores but there one was broken and unavailable. Surely they should have more than one wheelchair. So we went round with our punctured tyre. The lift upstairs for disabled people was difficult for my husband to get out of . The door wouldn't open for him. I had gone up the stairs to meet him and had to get him out from the outside. This store needs to look at making life easier for disabled customers as well as the fabled.

Amazing help and service by assistant Dan - Thank you so much. There's no way I would have survived without him today - I think he needs a bonus. 😀

Snake bites

Most snake bites in the UK are not serious. But it's important to get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Call 999 or go to A&E immediately if:

  • you think you, or someone else, has been bitten by a snake

Find your nearest A&E

Information:

If you're not in the UK when you are bitten by a snake, contact the emergency medical services in the country you're in.

Get foreign travel advice on GOV.UK

What to do while you're waiting for help

Do

  • stay calm, most snake bites in the UK are not serious and can be treated

  • keep the part of your body that was bitten as still as you can

  • lie in the recovery position if you can

  • take paracetamol for any pain

  • try to remember the colour and pattern of the snake to tell the doctor

  • take off any jewellery and loosen clothes near the bite, in case it swells

Don’t

  • do not go near the snake, or try to catch or kill it

  • do not try to suck or cut the poison (venom) out of the bite

  • do not tie anything tightly round the part of the body where the bite is

  • do not take aspirin or ibuprofen, as they can make bleeding worse

What happens at the hospital

You will usually need to stay in hospital for at least 24 hours if you have been bitten by a snake.

The bite will be cleaned and bandaged. You may be given an injection to help protect you from tetanus.

If you were bitten by a poisonous (venomous) snake you will be treated with a medicine to fight the venom. This is given through a thin tube into a vein, called a drip.

Types of UK snake

Only 3 types of snake are found in the wild in the UK.

The adder is the only venomous snake, but you should get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Telling the doctors the colour and pattern of the snake that bit you could help them treat it.
